Position Title:   Discipleship Minister

Reports To:  Lead Pastor and Elders

Position Type: Full‑Time, Salaried, Ministry Staff

 

 

Position Summary

The Discipleship Minister is responsible for refining, designing, implementing, and overseeing the church’s discipleship pathway. This role ensures that every person, from first‑time guest to mature believer, has clear opportunities to grow spiritually, connect relationally, and engage missionally. The Discipleship Minister develops leaders, strengthens small groups, improves assimilation, and supports overall pastoral care to help fulfill the Great Commission within the local church.

 

Key Responsibilities

1. Discipleship Pathway Leadership

Create and maintain a simple, effective discipleship process that guides spiritual growth.

Ensure all ministries align with the church’s discipleship strategy.

Develop environments (classes, workshops, cohorts) that help people take next steps in following Christ.

Develop and oversee the discipleship pathway (Starting Point, Partnership Track, Equip, Serving, small groups, outreach).

Further develop, initiate, and communicate HCC’s Next Steps which aligns with the Discipleship pathway (giving, discipleship groups, ministry involvement, missions, shared stories, prayer, etc.).

 

2. Discipleship (Small) Groups & Community Life

Oversee, train and develop Discipleship Groups. (Sunday morning and mid-week groups).

Recruit, find, equip, and shepherd discipleship (small) group and ministry leaders.

Launch new groups and strengthen existing ones.

Develop material and curriculum for discipleship groups. This would include finding or writing curriculum that aligns with the Sunday morning preaching series. Provide this curriculum, related training, and ongoing support for leaders.

Monitor group engagement, health, and multiplication.

Work alongside our men’s and women’s ministries,  and with HCC Renew.

Actively disciple others.

 

3. Assimilation & Member Engagement

Create vision and development of Hospitality ministry.

Oversee guest follow‑up processes and new member pathways.

Ensure new believers receive mentoring or foundational teaching.

Partner with staff and volunteers to increase connection and retention.

 

4. Leadership Development

Identify and disciple emerging leaders.

Help build a pipeline for volunteer and ministry leadership.

Train leaders in spiritual formation, shepherding, and group facilitation.

 

5. Spiritual Formation Ministries

Coordinate Bible studies, next‑steps classes, and growth opportunities.

Oversee specialty discipleship programs (e.g., new believer classes, Financial Peace University, spiritual growth courses, recovery/freedom ministries as applicable).

Evaluate curriculum to ensure theological alignment and discipleship effectiveness.

 

6. Pastoral Care & Support

Partner in pastoral care.

Share in pastoral responsibilities such as counseling, prayer, and visitation.

Support the Lead Pastor by helping shepherd the congregation through relational ministry.

Preach during the congregational main service eight to ten Sundays of the year.

 

7. Administrative & Ministry Oversight

Maintain discipleship data, metrics, and follow‑up systems.

Develop annual goals and ministry plans.

Manage discipleship budget (if applicable).

Recruit and coordinate volunteers needed for discipleship environments.

Partner with HCC staff in organizing and carrying out special services and events.

 

Qualifications

Spiritual & Character Qualifications

A mature and growing follower of Jesus Christ. (Loves Jesus)

Demonstrates strong character, integrity, and emotional health.

Committed to the mission, vision, and doctrine of the church.

A shepherding heart with a passion for making disciples.

 

Education & Experience

Bachelor’s degree in ministry, Bible, theology, or related field (Master’s preferred but not required).

3–5 years of ministry experience in discipleship, small groups, or pastoral leadership.

Experience training and developing leaders.

Experience overseeing systems for assimilation or spiritual growth (preferred).

 

Skills & Competencies

Strong relational and communication skills.

Ability to build, organize, and multiply teams.

Strategic thinker with an eye for building processes and pathways.

Comfortable teaching, facilitating groups, and pastoral care.

Organized, dependable, and able to manage multiple initiatives.
